For me, the most satisfying photographic portraiture is when you know the subject and are in no hurry – like making a painting. When I lived in northern Sudan, I had the opportunity to get to know people and the luxury of taking my time. This portrait was made very simply using sunlight filtered through a frosted window. The subject is an Eritrean girl whose mother was a refugee and lived in the town.
